- 12 pieces Cipollini Onions
- 1 cup Buttermilk
- 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
- 1 tablespoon Spice Mix (garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, dry mustard, salt, black pepper)
- 4 cups Oil for frying
Instructions
- Prep the Onions: Clean the Cipollini onions, remove the outer skin, and cut off the stem end while keeping the root intact.
- Bloom the Onions: Boil the onions in a pot for about 10 minutes until slightly tender. Drain and cool.
- Prepare the Batter: Mix all-purpose flour with the spice mix in one bowl and pour buttermilk into a separate bowl.
- Coat the Onions: Dip each onion in buttermilk, then roll in the flour and spice mix to coat.
- Heat the Oil: Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep pot or fryer.
- Fry the Onions: Fry coated onions in batches for 3-4 minutes until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- Make the Buttermilk Ranch Dip: Mix remaining buttermilk with additional spices and herbs like dill or parsley if desired.
Notes
Serve the blooming onions hot with the ranch dip in the center. They are perfect for snacking or entertaining guests.
