- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold)
- 1/2 cup milk (warm)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 packet active dry yeast (or 2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine warm milk with yeast and sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and knead until smooth.
- Chill the dough for 1 hour.
- Roll out the dough and fold it several times to create layers.
- Cut the dough into triangles and roll them up tightly to form croissants.
- Let them rise for 1-2 hours.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and brush the croissants with egg wash.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Serve warm.
Notes
For best results, ensure butter is very cold and do not skip the chilling step. You can also add fillings like chocolate or ham for variation.
