- 8 oz elbow macaroni
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 cups whole milk
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup panko bread crumbs
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add elbow macaroni and cook until al dente (7-8 minutes). Drain and set aside.
- Melt 4 tbsp of unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then whisk in 2 tbsp of all-purpose flour to form a roux and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in 2 cups of whole milk, stirring until the mixture thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
- Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce until well coated.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and sprinkle 1 cup of panko on top.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy.
Notes
For variations, consider adding spices or different cheeses. You can also add vegetables or meats for a heartier dish.
