Description
A delicious and hearty onion soup featuring sweet, caramelized onions, rich broth, and melted cheese, perfect for cozy nights or gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3 cups beef broth (or broth of your choice)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded (or your choice of melting cheese)
- Crusty bread for serving
Instructions
- In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently.
- After about 10 minutes, add the sugar to aid caramelization. Continue cooking until the onions are golden brown and tender, around 20 minutes total.
- Stir in the beef broth, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 20 minutes to allow flavors to blend.
- Preheat your oven to broil. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with a slice of crusty bread, and pile on the shredded cheese.
- Place bowls under the broiler for about 2-3 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly and golden brown. Watch closely to prevent burning.
- Carefully remove from oven and let cool slightly. Serve with additional crusty bread.
Notes
Use a mix of onion types for deeper flavor. Adjust broth to taste. Stir onions frequently to prevent burning. Don’t skip the broiling step for a cheesy crust.
