Description

Delightful homemade pretzel bites that are soft, chewy, and perfect for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¾ cups warm milk or water
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 9 cups water
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg (for an egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, warm milk, melted butter, and salt. Mix on medium speed for 4-5 minutes until smooth.
  2. Cover the bowl and let it rise in a warm place for 30-60 minutes until doubled in size.
  3. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  4. Bring 9 cups of water to a boil in a large pot and add the baking soda.
  5. Once the dough has risen, divide it into 12 pieces, roll into ropes, and cut into 1-2 inch sections.
  6. Drop each piece into boiling water for about 30 seconds to form a crust.
  7. Transfer the boiled pieces to baking sheets.
  8. Brush the tops with egg wash and sprinkle with salt.
  9. Bake for 12-14 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm with dipping sauce.

Notes

For a lighter pretzel, substitute milk with water. For a dairy-free option, use a dairy-free butter brush instead of egg wash.
