- 9 cups fresh apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 3 cups white sugar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt
- 4 cups water
Instructions
- Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and chopping them into uniform sizes, then toss with lemon juice in a large bowl.
- In a large Dutch oven, combine white sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and sea salt.
- Add 4 cups of water to the sugar mixture and bring to a low simmer over medium heat.
- Once the mixture starts to simmer, carefully stir in the prepared apples.
- Cover the pot and cook the apples for 6 to 10 minutes, until tender and the sauce has thickened.
- Remove from heat and let cool before using, canning, or freezing.
Notes
Store filling in airtight containers in the refrigerator for 3-5 days, or freeze it for up to 6 months. Can also be canned for long-term storage.
